The Economy of Giving

Burning Man's 10 principles, applied to building.

Success that isn't shared is incomplete. I learned in the desert that giving with open hands isn't charity: it's the most powerful economy there is. The trust you build by serving sells on its own.

  1. Give before you ask

Deliver real value with no transaction attached. The return comes through channels you don't control — and that's why it's bigger.

  2. Community over audience

An audience consumes; a tribe builds with you. Treat your people as a tribe, not as numbers.

  3. Decommodify

Not everything is a sale. The spaces where you sell nothing are the ones that strengthen the brand most.

  4. Radical participation

No spectators. Invite people to build, weigh in and show up with you.

  5. Leave a positive trace

Measure your impact by how many you inspired to build and to give — not by your followers.

EddyFest and my philanthropic work run on this economy. Giving hasn't cost me: it has multiplied me.
